2011 Japan Prize winners
TOKYO, Japan - Japan Prize laureates (from L) Toshio Hirano, dean of the Graduate School of Medicine at Osaka University, Tadamitsu Kishimoto, professor emeritus at Osaka University, and Kenneth Thompson, an engineer at Google Inc., pose for a photo in Tokyo on Jan. 25, 2011, as the year's winner of the Japan Prize Foundation award. Kishimoto and Hirano discovered interleukin 6, leading to the development of treatments for rheumatoid arthritis, while Thompson, together with fellow award recipient Dennis Ritchie, developed the UNIX operating system.
