TOKYO, Japan - File photo shows Yuko Sato, a House of Representatives member from the Democratic Party of Japan. Sato has decided to bolt the ruling party to join a regional political group, a source at the group said on March 3, 2011, in a fresh blow to Prime Minister Naoto Kan as he battles a deep rift within his party.

A new group created within Japan's Liberal Democratic Party holds its inaugural meeting in Tokyo on May 21, 2026, with 347 out of the ruling party's 417 lawmakers joining.
