Publisher apologizes over sensational magazine cover

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows the cover of the March 28 issue of the weekly magazine AERA with the headline ''Radiation is coming,'' which hit store shelves on March 19, 2011. The publisher, Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc., apologized on its website and twitter account after receiving complaints that the cover fans public fears following an accident at a quake-hit nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan.

TEPCO accident operation manuals with, without blackouts

TOKYO, Japan - Combination photo shows copies of a page which is mostly blacked out (L) and the same page without being blacked out (R) from Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s accident operation manuals for the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which was crippled by the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami. The governmental Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency publicized on Oct. 24, 2011, part of the manuals with few blacked-out parts, which TEPCO submitted at the agency's request, which was made after the utility submitted mostly blacked-out versions to parliament in September 2011 and drew public criticism.

British MOX plant to be closed

Ten Japanese electric power companies that operate nuclear power plants jointly covered the cost of renovating a Sellafield-based plant to produce plutonium-uranium mixed oxide, or MOX, fuel. Now the British government-affiliated Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, which runs the facility, has determined Japan will no longer need MOX fuel in the wake of the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, and has decided to close the reprocessing plant, industry sources said Oct. 18, 2011.
