Rakuten's Mikitani to donate 1 bil. yen

FUKUSHIMA, Japan - Hiroshi Mikitani (L), president of Internet mall operator Rakuten Co., hands a catalogue of donations to Fukushima Gov. Yuhei Sato (R) at the prefecture's disaster management headquarters in Fukushima on April 11, 2011. Mikitani announced the same day that he would individually donate a total of 1 billion yen to the prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima, while his company would donate 300 million yen to the prefectures, the areas hit hardest by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and massive tsunami March 11.

TEPCO accident operation manuals with, without blackouts

TOKYO, Japan - Combination photo shows copies of a page which is mostly blacked out (L) and the same page without being blacked out (R) from Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s accident operation manuals for the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which was crippled by the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami. The governmental Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency publicized on Oct. 24, 2011, part of the manuals with few blacked-out parts, which TEPCO submitted at the agency's request, which was made after the utility submitted mostly blacked-out versions to parliament in September 2011 and drew public criticism.

Toshiba to deliver water treatment system to Fukushima plant

TOKYO, Japan - Toshiba Corp. employees build a water treatment system in Yokohama on July 14, 2011. The company is set to deliver the system to the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to help decontamination efforts amid a series of problems with existing devices. The new system, which can treat 1,200 tons of water a day, will start operation from early August to help plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. deal with the crisis triggered by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

JR East president apologizes to Tokyo governor
