Japan protests U.S. paper ads

NEW YORK, United States - Photo shows full-page opinion ads in the March 1, 2012, edition of The New York Times, apparently claiming South Korean sovereignty over disputed islets under the pretext of tourism promotion. The Japanese Consulate General in New York said on March 15, 2012, that Japan has lodged a protest with the U.S. paper. The ads used the Korean name Dokdo for the Takeshima Islands, South Korean-controlled islets claimed by Japan in the Sea of Japan.
