Gov't marks Japan's 1952 recovery of sovereignty

GINOWAN, Japan - People attend a rally in Ginowan, Okinawa Prefecture, on April 28, 2013, to protest against a ceremony held the same day in Tokyo to commemorate the day Japan recovered its sovereignty in 1952 after its defeat in World War II. Okinawa opposed holding the ceremony as April 28 is regarded there as a "day of insult," when the prefecture was cut off from the mainland and forced to remain under U.S. control until its reversion to Japan in 1972.
