    NARA, Japan, Jan. 7 Kyodo - The head of a Buddha statue (far R) is transferred to the Eastern Golden Hall of Kofukuji, a temple in the western Japan city of Nara, from its National Treasure Hall for the first time in 80 years on Jan. 7, 2017, as the treasure hall is closed for a year for seismic strengthening work. After being created in the Hakuho period from the 7th to 8th centuries, the statue was burned in a fire leaving only its head, a national treasure.

        FUKUOKA, July 27 Kyodo - Popular "Ukiyo-e" artist Kitagawa Utamaro's painting of a courtesan drawn solely with black ink in the late 18th century with Utamaro's friend and writer Santo Kyoden's writing on the lives of courtesans is seen in Fukuoka, southwestern Japan, on July 22, 2015. The painting, discovered in April, will be exhibited at the Fukuoka Art Museum from Aug. 8.

Sugawara starred in a number of films and TV dramas, including the 1973 film "Battle Without Honor and Humanity" (Jingi naki tatakai) depicting a gangster conflict. He also engaged in agriculture in Yamanashi Prefecture, central Japan, in his later years.
