Japanese team devises rhodium alloy

KYOTO, Japan - Kyoto University professor Hiroshi Kitagawa holds a piece of rhodium alloy he and his research team have produced using nanotechnology. The team hopes the alloy will serve as a less expensive alternative to natural rhodium, which is used as an exhaust gas-purifying catalyst but extremely costly as it is one of the rarest and most valuable precious metals.

      KYOTO, Japan - Masazumi Harada (R), a doctor and expert on Minamata disease and mercury pollution, receives a certificate in Kyoto on Feb. 13, 2011, after being inducted into the Earth Hall of Fame Kyoto along with Elinor Ostrom, a Nobel laureate in economics and professor at Indiana University, and Jigme Singye Wangchuk, the former king of Bhutan. The award which is given in the name of Kyoto, the birthplace of the Kyoto Protocol, honors the achievements of those who have contributed to conservation of the global environment.

        Low-cost experimental rocket lifts off in Hokkaido

        TAIKI, Japan - An experimental rocket that uses liquid oxygen and polyethylene as composite propellant lifts off from Taichi, Hokkaido, on Dec. 23. The 2.8-meter rocket soared to an altitude of about 1,000 meters in 10 seconds. Developers say the rocket, developed by Harunori Nagata, professor of space engineering at Hokkaido University, takes just about one-10th of the launch cost for a conventional solid-fuel rocket.
