Decor on famous gate at Kyoto temple has antiseismic structure

KYOTO, Japan - Decorative muntins adorning the transom of an old gate at Higashi Honganji, a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, western Japan, are found in a recent survey by experts to be not just for decoration but for earthquake resistance. The Goeidomon Gate, as photographed on Feb. 19, 2014, is one of the three most famous gates in the ancient Japanese capital.
