Garden designer Sasaki holds 'Kaze no Denwa' picture book

TOKYO, Japan - Garden designer Itaru Sasaki in February 2014 holds picture book "Kaze no Denwa" (The Phone of the Wind), themed after a phone booth he built to provide a place to mourn for people who lost their loved ones in the March 2011 disaster, in the town of Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture. Visitors talk with their missing or deceased family members or friends in their heart at the booth. The book was written by children's book author Yoko Imoto.

SENDAI, Japan - An 8-millimeter film damaged by the March 2011 tsunami is pictured on March 20, 2014, in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture. A group led by Junji Ito, a specially appointed professor at Tokyo University of the Arts, is collecting 8-mm films and other media that record sceneries of Ofunato before the disaster.

Concert in N.Y. on eve of quake anniversary

NEW YORK, United States - Photo taken March 10, 2014, shows a joint concert by Japanese university students and U.S. music school students held in New York to commemorate the third anniversary of the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster in northeastern Japan. Five university students from Fukushima Prefecture, hit hard by the 2011 calamity, joined students of a public music school for children, along with members of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Disaster prevention center torn down in Kamaishi, Japan

KAMAISHI, Japan - A disaster prevention center in the Unosumai district of Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture, northeastern Japan, where many local residents died in the March 2011 tsunami after taking refuge there, is being torn down on Jan. 11, 2014. Bereaved family members frequented the facility to offer prayers at an alter set up inside, but the building's demolition was completed in February. A facility commemorating the victims is scheduled to be built at the site.

Designated shelter hit by tsunami

OTSUCHI, Japan - Kogan Temple is seen devastated in the town of Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture, on March 31, 2011, by the March 11 tsunami. At least 30 people who took shelter at the Buddhist temple went missing. They had gathered there as the building nearly 1 kilometer from the sea was designated as a tsunami evacuation facility. The temple also suffered a fire after the disaster. More than 100 designated shelters were hit by the tsunami.
