Monument built to mark tsunami survival

SENDAI, Japan - An Onagawa Junior High School student reads a message during a ceremony to unveil a stone monument completed at a shrine in Onagawa, Miyagi Prefecture, on March 23, 2014. A Japanese executive at a local company successfully evacuated its Chinese trainees to the shrine to escape the tsunami triggered by the 2011 major earthquake and died afterward. Students at the junior high school have collected donations to build a series of monuments in the town to hand down lessons from the disaster to future generations.
