Tomioka Silk Mill added to UNESCO list

TOKYO, Japan - Hiroshi Tabei, who served as the last manager of a section for preservation of the Tomioka Silk Mill in Gunma Prefecture for more than seven years at Katakura Industries Co., looks back on his those days on May 31, 2014 at the historic factory building, which was added to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list the following month.

Police arrested Toshiki Abe, a 49-year-old worker at the factory, the same day on suspicion of poisoning food products four separate times between last Oct. 3 and Oct. 7. More than 2,800 people have reported falling ill in possible connection with the poisoning.

          SHIRAKAWA, Japan - Snow-covered gasho-zukuri farmhouses in Shirakawa-go, Gifu Prefecture, are lit up during an annual event on Jan. 18, 2014. The traditional houses with steep thatched roofs, some of which are more than 250 years old, are designed to withstand the large amount of heavy snow. The Shirakawa-go and neighboring Gokayama regions were declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995.
