Documents on Korean envoys to Japan eyed for UNESCO list

KITAKYUSHU, Japan - Officials of Japanese and South Korean local governments and private organizations meet in Shimonoseki, western Japan, on Aug. 25, 2014, to discuss plans to seek the listing on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register of documents on Korean dynasty envoys dispatched to Japan mainly during the Edo period (1603-1868). They agreed to apply for registration in 2016.

The residence is the birthplace of Gotaro Mikami, a medical doctor who saved both Japanese and Russian soldiers during the 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese war.

HIROSHIMA, Japan - Fireworks light up the sky over Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima, an island in Hiroshima Prefecture, on Aug. 13, 2016. Around 5,200 fireworks were launched, with 200 bursting close to the sea. The shrine was registered on UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage list in December 1996.
