NIIGATA, Japan - Joetsu-myoko station in Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture, northeastern Japan, shown in this photo taken on Aug. 17, 2014, is one of the new station built for the Hokuriku Shinkansen bullet train line to be operated from March 14, 2015.

                      A 13-day photo exhibition on Megumi Yokota, abducted by North Korea at age 13 in 1977, begins at the Nihombashi Takashimaya department store gallery in Tokyo on Aug. 2, 2023. Yokota, one of the 17 people officially listed by Japan as having been abducted by Pyongyang in the 1970s and 1980s, became a symbol of the still unresolved abduction issue as five of them returned home in 2002 and the other 12, including her, remain unaccounted for.
