      OSAKA, Japan - A danjiri, an elaborately carved traditional wooden float, is pulled by neighborhood people through a street in the city of Kishiwada, Osaka Prefecture, on Sept. 13, 2014, as the annual two-day Danjiri Festival began. The festival features 34 teams pulling floats at breakneck speeds, with neighborhood leaders hopping and dancing on the top of the floats.

            OSAKA, Japan - An Okinawa Rail, a critically endangered, flightless bird found only in northern Okinawa, is suspended inside its cage to maintain upright posture, a measure to help in its rehabilitation after its spinal cord was damaged, at a facility run by a nonprofit group protecting wild animals in Uruma, Okinawa Prefecture, on Sept. 27, 2013. The bird, believed to have been hit by a car and found immobile on a road in the summer of 2011, has since been recovering and now undergoes walking training at the facility. (Kyodo)

              OSAKA, Japan - A nutria eats grass near a river in the city of Osaka on Jan. 12, 2014. Having thick brown fur and orange front teeth, the large rodent originally from South America was imported to Japan before World War II for fur but later became feral and now inhabits parts of western Japan. Many local governments designate it as a destructive animal because of damage it causes to agricultural crops.

                OSAKA, Japan - A Japanese pond turtle, a species endemic to Japan, hatches from an egg at the house of Katsuya Yamamoto in the city of Kobe on Sept. 11, 2013. Yamamoto, a 52-year-old glasses shop owner who has been protecting the endangered turtle species, plans to raise the baby turtle for a few years before releasing it in a pond where nonnative species such as red-eared sliders have been removed.
