OSAKA, Japan - A Japanese pond turtle, a species endemic to Japan, hatches from an egg at the house of Katsuya Yamamoto in the city of Kobe on Sept. 11, 2013. Yamamoto, a 52-year-old glasses shop owner who has been protecting the endangered turtle species, plans to raise the baby turtle for a few years before releasing it in a pond where nonnative species such as red-eared sliders have been removed.
