Toray unveils device shortening time for diagnosis

TOKYO, Japan - Toray Industries Inc. announces in Tokyo on Sept. 30, 2014, the development of a prototype medical device designed to diagnose a gravely ill patient's condition in approximately 20 minutes by measuring the amount of specific protein content. The date for the release of the device is scheduled after October 2015.

      Toshiba develops 'DNA chip' for interferon efficacy

      TOKYO, Japan - Toshiba Corp. said Sept. 19 it has developed the prototype of a compact medical diagnosis equipment (handout photo) to help doctors judge whether interferon treatment is suitable for specific hepatitis C patients by examining individual characteristics of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of the patients. ''DNA Chip'' enables doctors to speedily decide whether interferon may be administered to a patient despite its side-effects, or if other treatment should be used, Toshiba said.

        TOKYO, Japan - A group of doctors at the University of Tokyo Hospital brief reporters Dec. 20 on the condition of Hisashi Ouchi, who was exposed to radiation while at work in a conversion building at JCO Co.'s uranium processing plant in Tokaimura, Ibaraki Prefecture, on Sept. 30. Doctors said 35-year-old Ouchi is in an extremely critical condition and is continuing to deteriorate.
