TOKYO, Japan - A box of fish chilled by ice, made with seawater-like saltwater and in the consistency of snow to keep seafood fresh longer, is shown in Tokyo on Dec. 26, 2014, by supermarket chain Daiei Inc. ahead of the start of a trial from Jan. 1, 2015, using the method to transport fresh fish from Otaru on the northernmost main island of Hokkaido to one of its stores in Chiba Prefecture east of the Japanese capital.

LED lighting marks 100th anniversary of Tokyo Station

Test run for new bullet train service in Hokkaido starts

HAKODATE, Japan - An "H5 series" bullet train leaves a depot in Nanae, in Japan's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido, on Dec. 1, 2014, for a test run. The trial run is being conducted ahead of the spring 2016 launch of the Hokkaido Shinkansen, which seeks to connect southern Hokkaido and Tokyo in about 4 hours and 10 minutes.

2 supermarket chains resume selling U.S. beef
