Komura becomes defense minister returning to LDP mainstream
TOKYO, Japan - New defense Minister Masahiko Komura speaks at a press conference on Aug. 27. The veteran lawmaker, who heads a small Liberal Democratic Party faction, was forced out of the party's mainstream and held no posts after he lost in an LDP leadership election in 2003 to then Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
