(230101) -- HAIKOU, Jan. 1, 2023 (Xinhua) -- A yellow-breasted bunting is pictured in Dongzhaigang National Nature Reserve, south China's Hainan Province, Dec. 16, 2022. The yellow-breasted buntings, listed as a bird species under national first-class protection, were spotted in the nature reserve during a recent bird monitoring survey. The Yangtze alligator, which has lived on Earth for over 200 million years, is a first-class protected animal endemic to China. The species, also known as Chinese alligator, lives along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the longest waterway in the country. Zhang Hongan lives near the Hongxing Reservoir in Xuancheng City, where he once accidentally found the trail of wild Yangtze alligators in 1982. In the more than 40 years from then on, Zhang's parents and brother had become rangers for Yangtze alligators. In 2024, Zhang Hongan took over the duty, working as a field ranger in Anhui Yangtze alligator national nature reserve.
