STORYLINE:
People in Village Sahel, Tizi Ouzou Province, Algeria celebrated their Amazigh New Year on Thursday.
Dressed in traditional costumes, the Imazighen sang and danced to celebrate the holiday.
The origin of the Amazigh calendar is still ambiguous, as some say it bears its origin from the day the Amazigh King Chachnaq was enthroned a pharaoh. Others say it is linked to an agrarian calendar.
Algeria recognized Yennayer, the first day of the Amazigh New Year, as a public holiday in 2017.
