Dutch chess player Anish Giri won the prestigious Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2023, which concluded in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, on Sunday.
In the 13th and final round of the 85th edition of the tournament at the Dutch west coast, the runner-up in 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2021 won playing with white against Romanian Richard Rapport.
Giri finished first with 8.5 points. Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan and Norwegian world champion Magnus Carlsen ended joint second with 8 points and China's Ding Liren had to settle for 11th place with 5.5 points.
Giri took over the title from Carlsen, who had won eight times in Wijk aan Zee.
Twenty-eight-year-old grandmaster Giri had a strong tournament, remained unbeaten and beat both world No. 1, Carlsen, and world No. 2, Ding Liren.
