STORYLINE:
Parade was staged on Friday in Louisiana's New Orleans, the U.S., to kick off the Mardi Gras season.
As the parade began, the crowd reveled in enthusiasm, demanding gifts from Krewe members, who threw Mardi Gras beads, toys, glasses, silver coins and cups from floats to people.
Mardi Gras is French, which means Fat Tuesday. Louisiana was once a French colony, and Mardi Gras is deeply ingrained in the culture of cities throughout the state.
The Mardi Gras season, which lasts more than a month, is held annually in New Orleans from January to February. Most of the traditional Mardi Gras activities were canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year's Mardi Gras Day falls on Feb. 21.
