March 2023 was the second hottest and driest recorded in Spain this century and the third warmest since records began, according to data published by the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) on Tuesday.
AEMET reports that despite a spell of freezing weather earlier this month, the average temperature for March was 11.6 degrees Celsius for mainland Spain, which is 1.8 degrees above the average for the period 1991-2020.
A record high of 33 degrees Celsius was recorded in the southeast Spanish city of Murcia while in the Canary Islands (off the west coast of Africa) average temperatures were 3 percent above the norm.
The above-average temperature was accompanied by weather much drier than usual, with the average rainfall over the country reaching just 21.2 millimeters, down 64 percent compared
