The museum is located in the south of St. Petersburg. As part of the museum, the Catherine Palace was built in the 18th century and served as the royal summer residence for many years. The Amber Room at the palace disappeared mysteriously during World War II. After decades of reconstruction, the Amber Room finished reconstruction and opened to the public in 2003.
