SOUNDBITE 3 (English): JOE ZATA, Artist STORYLINE: On a hot afternoon in the rural community of Domboshava, about 45 km north of Harare, 48-year-old artist Joe Zata harvested Lantana camara as raw material to create various giant animal sculptures and furniture products. Lantana is an invasive and perennial plant that grows up to 2-4 meters in Zimbabwe. It has spread aggressively throughout the country and is considered dangerous to the environment and livestock, but for Zata, lantana has transformed his life for better. After selling his artworks, Zata has managed to buy a piece of land to do farming and provide a better life for his family.
