Freed Egyptian Human Rights Campaigner Arrives In Italy - Bologna
Egyptian activist Patrick Zaki, flanked by rector of the University of Bologna, Giovanni Molari and by Prof Rita Monticelli upon his arrival at University of Bologna, Italy on July 23, 2023. Zaki was pardoned by Egypt's President on July 19, 2023, a day after his three-year jail term sparked an outcry from local rights groups and Western governments. He was jailed over a 2019 article recounting the discrimination that he and other members of Egypt's Coptic Christian minority say they have suffered. Zaki, a researcher was studying at Bologna University in Italy until his arrest in 2020 while on a visit to Egypt. Photo by Corrispondente Bologna/LiveMedia/IPA/ABACAPRESS.COM
