French-Spanish lawyer Juan Branco is welcomes by his sister as he arrives at Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle airport, outside Paris, after he was placed under judicial supervision and expelled from Senegal, on August 8, 2023. Branco, who is one of the lawyers defending the Senegalese opposition politician Ousmane Sonko, was arrested on August 4, 2023 in Mauritania and handed over to Senegalese authorities. He was indicted on August 6, with charges including conspiracy, spreading false news, acts likely to compromise public security or cause serious political unrest, and contempt of court, according to his lawyers.
