Millions of residents of Jakarta have for the past several weeks suffered from some of the worst air pollution recorded anywhere in the world. The polluted air has contributed to respiratory ailments, with more than 630,000 cases recorded in the first six months of the year. The Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya, said that the largest source of air pollution in Jakarta and its surroundings came from vehicles, namely 44%, followed by steam power plants at 34%, and other sources.
