Reporter's Detention Sparks Protests - Istanbul
Kenan Sener, the Secretary General of the Association of Journalists, issued a statement condemning the tactics employed to intimidate and stifle the press, primarily through the implementation of what many refer to as the 'censorship law'. Journalists and activists in Istanbul, Turkey, protested on Thursday, November 2, 2023, against the arrest of Tolga Sardan, a well-known investigative journalist from T24 Newspaper, following a report on corruption. Journalist Tolga Sardan was arrested on Wednesday evening based on a controversial "disinformation" law after reporting on an alleged report by the Turkish intelligence agency MIT to the government about investigations into corruption within the judiciary. The prosecutor's office initiated an investigation for "public dissemination of false information" following the publication of Sardan's article. The Presidential office denied the existence of the MIT report quoted by Sardan. Photo by Efekan Akyuz/Middle East Images/ABACAPRESS.COM
