Kim Jong Il's eldest son back home: report

SEOUL, South Korea - File photo of a man who appears to be Kim Jong Nam, North Korean leader Kim Jong Il's eldest son. Photo taken at Beijing airport in February. South Korea's Chosun Ilbo, citing a South Korean intelligence source and a senior North Korean official who defected to the South, reported Aug. 27 that Kim, 36, returned home around June after living overseas for years and has taken up a post at the Organization and Guidance Department of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea. The department is the key agency which controls the ruling party, the military and the government of North Korea. (Kyodo)

S. Korean A-bomb survivor who sought unpaid medical fees dies

TOKYO, Japan - Lee Kang Young (photo), a South Korean atomic bomb survivor who filed a lawsuit in Japan over unpaid medical allowances, died on July 11 in a hospital in Busan, South Korea. He was 78. Lee, born in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, was exposed to radiation in the U.S. atomic bombing of Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945, while he was working there as a forced laborer. Ex-Geneva envoy Oshima named as Japan ambassador to S. Korea: source

SEOUL, South Korean - The Japanese government has unofficially named Shotaro Oshima (file photo), former permanent representative to the international organizations in Geneva, as the new ambassador to South Korea, a diplomatic source said on June 8. Oshima will replace Toshiyuki Takano, who has been assigned to the post since January 2003, in the second half of this year, the source said.
