Alataw Pass is a major land port at the China-Kazakhstan border in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Cui Hongwu, an official with the border inspection station at the port, has been working for over 10 years. Here he met his wife Liu Xin, who is his colleague and works as a police dog handler. In recent years, the Alataw Pass has seen a growing number and accelerating frequency of inbound and outbound train trips, which means a huge amount of work for Cui Hongwu and his colleagues. However, besides increasingly heavy workload, they also have to adapt to the changing climate here. Located along the G219, the longest national highway with the highest average elevation in China, the Alataw Pass is troubled with windy weather and huge temperature difference.
