Weather supercomputer to forecast linear rain bands

Photo taken in Kiyose, western Tokyo, on Feb. 19, 2024, shows a supercomputer that the Japan Meteorological Agency will start operating on March. 5. With a computing capability twice that of conventional ones, the new computer can locate linear rain bands, which can bring torrential downpours, a half day ahead of their approach.
