STORYLINE:
Tourists witnessed the solar alignment over Abu Simbel Temple in Aswan, Egypt, as rays of the morning sun reached the innermost shrine and illuminated inside sculptures on Thursday.
The solar alignment, a rare phenomenon, takes place twice a year on Feb. 22 and Oct. 22.
Locals believe the dates mark the coronation of King Ramses II and his birthday respectively.
Abu Simbel Temple is one of the largest temples carved in rocks in the world and was built by Ramses nearly 3,300 years ago.
