Yuehe historical area, which covers an area of 90,000 square meters, could date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). With the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, Waiyue river and Liyue river flowing through, the area is the most complete and largest historical area in Jiaxing City that can best showcase the residential and cultural characteristics of the water town in "Jiangnan," the scenic region south of the Yangtze River. Since 2003, various measures were taken to regain the prosperity of the area: more than 80,000 square meters of traditional residential buildings were restored in traditional style, and a tourism industry has been developed taking advantages of local historical heritages. Liang Zuying, 48, hails from Wuying Village, a Miao ethnic-minority hamlet that is hidden deep in the towering mountains straddling Guangxi and Guizhou. In the past, the impassable mountains and rugged landscape rendered locals extremely poor. Due to their traditional views and poor family conditions, many parents did not send their daughters to school. Liang and many other women in the village received little education and could neither read nor speak Mandarin, a major impediment that isolated them from the outside world. From March 2020, local authorities initiated a training program in Wuying Village to teach ethnic women Mandarin, in a bid to remove language barriers between them and people beyond the village, while improving their communication and vocational skills.
