Chitra Purnima Rituals

Ersat, a 19-year-old ethnic Hindu Tamil, is posing as a portraiture subject before beginning to pierce his body with sharp irons as part of the ritual procession of the Chitirai Purnami Tiruvizha celebrations. The procession is moving from the Shri Bathara Kaliamman temple through several roads in Medan, Indonesia, on April 21, 2024. Hindus believe that the Chitirai Purnami Tiruvizha rituals are a way to show their devotion to the God Shri Kaliamman on the full moon of the Chitirai month in the Tamil calendar, according to the temple priest, Nileganden.
