Protests Continue At Columbia University Days After Arrests Of Pro-Palestine Students
Tents are remaining in place for a second week of ongoing protests on the campus of Columbia University in New York City, on April 15, 2024. In the foreground, a makeshift memorial is lying to Israeli hostages kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Tensions are remaining high amidst ongoing talks between students and the administration days after Columbia University President Nemat ''Minouche'' Shafik called the NYPD onto the college campus to arrest scores of pro-Palestine students who were refusing to dismantle protest encampments on the main campus quad. The standoff and arrests are occurring after President Shafik had faced questions before Congress on campus antisemitism and enforcement of rules against protests. Demonstrators are demanding investment transparency, divestment from Israel in the wake of the ongoing Israel-Gaza War, and amnesty for students disciplined for participation in the protests.
