Protests Continue At Columbia University Days After Arrests Of Pro-Palestine Students
Students are walking past a display of Israeli and American flags on the main campus quad of Columbia University in New York, United States, on April 25, 2024. Tents are remaining in place as part of the ''Gaza Solidarity Encampment'' for a second week of ongoing campus protests. Tensions are remaining high amidst ongoing talks between students and the administration days after Columbia University President Nemat ''Minouche'' Shafik called the NYPD onto the campus to arrest scores of pro-Palestine students who refused to dismantle protest encampments on the main campus quad. The standoff and arrests occurred after President Shafik had faced questions before Congress on campus antisemitism and enforcement of rules against protests. Demonstrators are demanding investment transparency, divestment from Israel in the wake of the ongoing Israel-Gaza War, and amnesty for students disciplined for participation in the protests.
