Guadalajara Celebrates The Alto Tajo Crocheters' Festival - Spain

Two men participate in the Fiesta de los Gancheros del Alto Tajo, August 31, 2024, in Taravilla, Guadalajara, Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). The Fiesta Ganchera, or Fiesta de los Gancheros, is a cultural event held on the last weekend of August that commemorates the ancient activity of logging, which consisted of transporting and directing along the river the pine trunks felled in the upper reaches of the Tagus to the Madrid town of Aranjuez, where they were used to build the various royal residences in the time of Philip II. The celebration has been declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest and an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) by the Government of Castilla-La Mancha, as well as Intangible Heritage of Humanity by Unesco. In July, the lavender fields in Brihuega (Guadalajara) bloom, covering more than a thousand hectares. At the end of July or beginning of August, the flower begins to lose its color and turns grayish, marking the time for harvesting. Brihuega was the Spanish pioneer in lavender cultivation 30 years ago. In these fields alone, harvesting reaches up to 2,500 kilos of essence per day.
