Soviet War Memorial In Treptower Park In Berlin
The Soviet War Memorial in Treptow Park in Berlin, Germany, on September 30, 2022, is the largest memorial to the fallen soldiers of the Red Army in Germany, inaugurated on May 8, 1949. It serves as both a commemorative monument and a military cemetery where over 7,000 Red Army soldiers are buried. Recently, the memorial becomes the target of graffiti protests, reflecting current geopolitical tensions in the region. At the beginning of April 2022, unknown persons graffiti the memorial with anti-Russian slogans, spraying messages such as 'Ukrainian Blood on Russian Hands' or 'Death to all Russians' on the pedestal in red paint. A few days later, they add the 'Z' symbol and slogans such as 'Murderer' or 'Orcs'. The memorial is since then under increased surveillance. In several places in Germany, there are calls to tear down Soviet memorials in the country, sparking a public debate that is highly controversial in light of Russia's military invasion of Ukraine.
