Seeds from atomic bomb-exposed tree
Kunihiko Sakuma (R), head of an association for Hiroshima atomic bomb survivors' groups, hands ginkgo seeds taken from a tree that survived the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima to an official at the Botanical Garden in Oslo on Dec. 9, 2024, ahead of the award ceremony the following day for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize. The seeds from the over 200-year-old tree, located about 1.4 kilometers away from Ground Zero, were donated to the botanical garden administered by the University of Oslo at the request of Oslo city, made after Nihon Hidankyo, Japan's leading organization of atomic bomb survivors, won the prize in October.
