Intensified DRC fighting displaces 35,000 civilians, injures 9 peacekeepers - Goma
Displaced people are seen at the Nzulo port, near Goma, North Kivu province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), on Jan. 23, 2025. Intensified fighting in eastern DRC has triggered significant new displacement of civilians and injured nine peacekeepers, a UN spokesman said on Friday. Peter Cirimwami, the military governor of North Kivu, a province under a state of siege in eastern DR Congo, died amid violent hostilities and advances by the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels, authorities confirmed on Friday. This incident occurred amid violent clashes between the DRC military and the M23 rebels, who have taken control of Sake, a strategically important town considered the last barrier to Goma, the capital of North Kivu province.
