First Night of Muharram in Karbala - Iraq

Clerics and people gather between the two holy shrines of Imam Hussein and al-Abbas on the first night of Muharram in Karbala, Iraq on June 26, 2025. Evey year on the first day of Muharram, ceremonies are held in Karbala to change the banners of the two holy domes Imam Hussein and his brother al-Abbas from red to black, announcing the entry into the month of grief. The red flag symbolizes that the blood has not yet been avenged, and it is raised through the year, while the black flag symbolizes mourning after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein and his family in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
