Japan: Fire Erupts on Fireworks Barges at Yokohama Festival, Event Canceled

A fireworks festival in Yokohama’s Minato Mirai district descended into chaos on Monday evening, August 4, when two of eight launch barges caught fire, forcing the cancellation of the event. Five crew members jumped into the sea and were rescued, with one sustaining minor injuries. About 20,000 fireworks had been scheduled, but the blaze — reportedly caused by a launch system malfunction — continued firing for a short time despite attempts to halt it. The fire was extinguished Tuesday morning, and police and the coast guard are investigating.
