Unusually persistent heavy rain hit Tarapacá, a normally arid region in northern Chile, triggering flooding and landslides in Iquique and Alto Hospicio. Floodwater accumulated in residential neighborhoods, while landslides forced the preventive closure of parts of major roads. Authorities ordered evacuations in some areas.
