India: Traditional Tree-Climbing Contest Held During Nanda Pati Mela

A traditional tree-climbing contest was held during the Nanda Pati Mela in Kaproli village, Pauri Garhwal, on September 21. Participants tried to scale a tall chir pine whose trunk had been peeled, coated with oil, milk and curd, and planted in the village square. Those who reached the top collected prizes including fruits, leaves and money as villagers gathered to celebrate.
