The warship was caught in a typhoon while returning home and sank off the coast of Kushimoto. Of about 650 people on board, only 69 survived and returned home after local residents rescued them.

(1)Kamato Hongo, world's oldest person, dies at 116

KAGOSHIMA, Japan - The world's oldest person, Kamato Hongo (in an undated file photo) of the city of Kagoshima, died at the age of 116 in a Kagoshima hospital on Oct. 31, city officials said. Hongo, born in 1887 in the town of Isen on Tokunoshima Island, Kagaoshima Prefecture in southwestern Japan, was certified as the world's oldest person in March last year by the Guinness Book of Records.

Hitoshi Ashida

Hidoshi AshidaBorn on Nov. 15, 1887 and died on June 20, 1959. Ashida joined the Foreign Ministry after graduating from the University of Tokyo in 1912 but resigned from the ministry in protest over the Manchurian Incident. Ashida became prime minister on March 10, 1948 but was forced to resign on Oct. 15 of the same year because of being involved in the Showa Denko scandal. In December of that year, Ashida was arrested but finally acquitted in 1958.
