Statue of General Saigo - Ueno Park, Tokyo, Japan

Statue of General Saigo Takamori (Takanaga) (1828-1877). Saigo was one of the most influential samurai in Japanese history, living during the late Edo Period and early Meiji Era. He has been dubbed the 'last true samurai'. The famous bronze statue shown here (of Saigo in hunting attire with his dog) stands in Ueno Park, Tokyo, Japan. Made by Takamura Koun, it was unveiled on 18 December 1898. Date: circa 1910s

Hiroshima Castle, Hiroshima, Japan

Hiroshima Castle (Carp Castle), Japan - home of the daimyo (feudal lord) of the Hiroshima han (fief). Constructed in the 1590s, but destroyed by the atomic bombing on 6th August 1945. Rebuilt in 1958, and now serving as a museum of Hiroshima's history prior to World War II. Date: circa 1910s

Russo-Japanese War - Captured Wagons, Office and Train

Russo-Japanese War - Captured Russian baggage wagons, The Head Office of the Military Railways at Dairen (now Dalian, formerly Dalny) and a Railway Train at Liaoyang Station in the Liaoning province of China. Russian Admiral Eugene Alexeyeff was blamed for splitting precious resources shipped 5,000 miles across the single tracked Trans-Siberian Railway and Manchurian Railway between Dalny and Port Arthur (pictured here). The inset photographs are creatively framed as the windows of a railway carriage! Date: circa 1910s

The graves of three victims of a North Sea outrage, Hull, Yorkshire. The Dogger Bank Incident (or 'Russian Outrage') occurred on 22 October 1904, when the Russian fleet, on its way to take part in the Russo-Japanese War, mistook 48 British trawlers for an Imperial Japanese Navy force. Two British seamen (George Henry Smith and William Richard Leggett) drowned, and another (Walter Whelpton) died from shock in May 1905. Date: 1910s

Port Arthur - The Pushkin School

Port Arthur - The Pushkin School during the period of Russian occupation of the city. Port Arthur is now under Chinese control and is known as Lushunkou (a district in the municipality of Dalian, Liaoning province, also called Lushun City or Lushun Port, formerly known as Ryojun). Lushunkou has an excellent natural harbour, the possession and control of which became a 'casus belli' (justification for the act of war) during the Russo-Japanese War (19041905). Japanese and then Soviet administration would continue until 1953. Date: circa 1910s
