Gov't to not review new expressway tariff in about-face

Tokyo to launch annual pass for 9 historical Japanese gardens

TOKYO, Japan - The Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association will introduce an annual pass for nine historical gardens in Tokyo beginning Feb. 1. The price is 4,000 yen for adults and 2,000 yen for people over 65. The nine Japanese gardens are: Hamarikyu Onshi Teien (photo), Kiyosumi Teien, Koishikawa-Korakuen, Kyu-Furukawa Teien, Kyu-Iwasaki-tei Teien, Kyu-Shibarikyu Onshi Teien, Mukojima Hyakka-en, Tonogayato Teien and Rikugi-en. The current annual pass is valid for one garden only.

Sojitz arm to sell bargain-priced, 1-week-only DVD software

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows some of the bargain-priced DVD software which Ebistrade Inc., a subsidiary of trading firm Sojitz Corp., will start marketing on Aug. 4. The company said on July 27 that its DVD movies and other software that can be played only for a week cost only 525 yen, compared with 2,000 yen-3,000 yen for conventional DVD products.

Street smokers start to face fine in central Tokyo

Wine fans eager as Beaujolais Nouveau arrives in Japan

OSAKA, Japan - Officials of the customs office at Kansai airport in Osaka examine bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau for clearance on Nov. 9, the first day of their arrival. Imported into Japan from the Beaujolais region near Lyons in southwestern France, the wine will go on sale for about 2,000 yen per bottle, the same as last year.

New 2,000-yen banknotes include 9,000 misprinted ones

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows a misprinted 2,000-yen banknote. The Finance Ministry said July 21 some 9,000 of the newly issued 2,000-yen banknotes were misprinted but it has no plans to recall them because the misprint does not invalidate them. Some 5,000 of the misprinted bills have already been put in circulation through the Osaka branch of the Bank of Japan (BOJ), the central bank, the ministry said.

Printing of 2,000 yen bills begins

TOKYO, Japan - Japan's Finance Ministry on May 8 begins printing 2,000 yen banknotes at its Takinogawa plant in Tokyo's Kita Ward. The new bills, issued to commemorate the summit of the Group of Eight nations in Okinawa Prefecture on July 21-23, feature an illustration of the Shureimon Gate in Naha, considered a symbol of the prefecture. The bills will be put into circulation July 19.

TOKYO, Japan - The Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Japan announced April 21 that 2,000-yen banknotes will be issued for the first time July 19. Miyazawa shows design of 2,000 yen bill

TOKYO, Japan - Finance Minister Kiichi Miyazawa shows on Oct. 29 the design of a 2,000 yen bill which will be issued by July next year to mark the year 2000. The front of the bill depicts the Shureimon gates of Shuri Castle on the outskirts of Naha, Okinawa Prefecture. The other side depicts a scene from the ''Tale of Genji,'' the Japanese classic written in the early 11th century by court lady Murasaki Shikibu.
