Narita airport holds ceremony over extending shorter runway

New Narita runway completed amid local farmers' opposition

NARITA, Japan - A YS-11 plane conducts an inspection flight over the house of farmers opposing the expansion of Narita airport, east of Tokyo, on Oct. 31, the same day construction of a second airport runway was completed. The 2,180-meter runaway, scheduled to open next April, is designed to accommodate short-haul flights such as those to and from other Asian cities.

NARITA, Japan - The New Tokyo International Airport Authority submits on Sept. 3 to the Transport Ministry an amended plan to build a 2,180-meter interim runway at Narita airport. According to the plan, The interim runway would be shifted about 800 meters northward (downward in the photo) compared with the original plan, to avoid tracts of land whose owners have refused to sell them.
